(1) Cycle Design
cycle design for urban transportation and recreational activities.
Seoul Cycle Design Competition invites cycle designs that are beautiful, practical, and safe.
We hope to discover innovative and original ideas that can have a positive economic impact for
the cycle industry. There will be particular interest in urban cycles that anybody will be able to ride easily
around Seoul, as well as cycles that address high-end design trends in recreational and sport bikes.
There should be an emphasis on practical designs that can be commercialized within five years
(2) Cycle Fashion & Accessories Design
clothing, helmets, gloves, footwear, carriers, raincoats, lights, control levers, other cycle parts
and  accessories, etc.
This category hopes to create a greater interest in fostering a robust cycling culture and lifestyle that
joins style with practicality. Designs appropriate in this category include: eco-friendly and fashionable clothing;
cycle parts for cycling safety; and clothes and accessories that take into account Seoul's climate
and environment.
There should be an emphasis on practical designs that can be commercialized within five years
(3) Cycling Infrastructure
cycle storage equipments, cycle racks, traffic systems for cycling, cycle rental systems, and other high-tech,
 cycling-related systems
Institutional and infrastructure efficiency for cyclist convenience is the most important consideration in promoting
the widespread use of cycles in an urban landscape.
The Seoul Cycle Design Competition is calling for ideas on cycling systems that are user-friendly, safe,
and appropriate for Seoul's traffic conditions.
Participants can present suggestions about cycling promotion in Seoul, including ways to make transferring
from cycles to public transportation (e.g. subway trains) easier.
There will also be a keen focus on efficient rental systems based on Seoul's IT infrastructure (e.g. GPS).
There should be an emphasis on design concepts that can be put into practice within five years
 
No particular qualifications required
- adult: 18 years or older (born before Dec. 31, 1991)
- adolescent: 17 years or younger (born after Jan. 1, 1992)
 
Prizes & special benefits
Winners will receive medals and prize money totaling KRW 52million. (about $ 46,000 USD)
Individuals or teams from Korea who are awarded the grand prize or the gold medal
in each category will receive overseas training and winners from overseas will receive invitations
to the awards ceremony.
 
 
Winning designs will be published in the Seoul Cycle Design Competition catalogue,
which will be distributed among design firms and organizations in Korea and other countries.
 
Exhibition & Award Ceremony
Winning designs will be exhibited at the Seoul Design Fair 2010 from September 17th to October 7th, 2010.
The awards ceremony will be held as part of the design fair's closing ceremony that will be held at the Seoul Olympic Stadium on October 7th.
And as always designboom will publish an exhaustive results report.
 
Information on awards and prize money
Invitation costs for winners to the awards ceremony shall not exceed KRW 3mil per person/team.
Overseas winners will be subject to the tax laws of their respective countries.
Winning designs submitted by Korean nationals shall be exempt from taxation in accordance with
the enforcement of decree article 18 of the income tax act.
Winners residing overseas shall pay postage for receiving medals and brochures.
 
The judging panel will be composed of an international group of experts who will conduct their evaluation
in a professional and impartial manner according to the criteria established by the judges themselves.
The judging panel will give priority to designs considered to be both structurally/functionally and socially
innovative. Designs in their initial stages should not be entered into the contest.

Only well-developed ideas will be accepted for consideration. The judges will expect more than just good ideas.
Their evaluation will focus on how well the concepts are expressed, specified,
and how practical they will be to produce.
 
Projects should be original.
Projects may not be marked with any form of identification.
Projects should be kept confidential and not be published or exposed to digital media
before the results are announced.

The following infractions will lead to exclusion from the competition.
If an infraction is discovered after the results announcement, this submission will be disqualified,
and the disqualified individual/team will be compelled to return all prizes:
- designs already awarded in and/or outside Korea
- designs that violate intellectual property rights
- designs that have been produced in series and commercialized will not be accepted.

Teams register with one name only
- when submitting works you should add all team member's names.
 
Whether you're an individual or group, you can submit a maximum of two entries for each category.
For every entry you will be requested to supply:
1. Up to 3 files for uploading to www.designboom.com
(Images or a composition of more images) of your project.
To upload your images please note: use only .gif, .jpeg, (72 dpi) max 150 kb each file, RGB color mode.

Max image size width: 600 pixels.
Max image size height: 800 pixels.

The entry submitted is a low-res version of your original work.
You are asked to prepare high resolution images in 300 dpi.(594¡¿841§®/300dpi/jpg or pdf format)

These original high-resolution image(s) will be requested only if your work is shortlisted.

You can also submit a video clip. (Acceptable formats: flv or swf files)
You are asked to prepare a high resolution video but are asked to submit only a low resolution version
in size 640 x 480; max 10MB. When creating a video clip, make sure the file is a video or flash file data
supported by flash player or can be automatically played.

3. You will be requested to accept the competition guidelines
Competition guidelines: Projects participating to the competition, must be original works.

Projects must be free from copyrights and any kind of obligation. the design shall not in any way infringe
any third party's right, including but not limited to copyright, logos, trademark, trade names,
or other proprietary rights of publicity or privacy.

Only entries with a declaration of authorship are accepted!
(When submitting your design you will be asked to tick a box of declaration)

 
Works can be submitted from until july 05th, 2010.
Deadline: 17:00 GMT
 
final results will be announced in September 2010.
 
Any moral and paternity right regarding the project sent in for application is designer's property.

However by submitting a design in the competition, the participant agrees to provide
SEOUL DESIGN FOUNDATION with the right of first refusal to the exclusive use of the design.
This option is valid through December 31, 2010.

If SEOUL DESIGN FOUNDATION exercise the above right for production on an exclusive basis and sine die,
the aforementioned FOUNDATION shall pay a one-time fee to the designer
(amount to be determined between the parties)

And, by participating in the competition, all participants authorise designboom,
and SEOUL DESIGN FOUNDATION to publish and exhibit all the designs (including project data submitted) -
waiving compensation - at exhibitions and events and/or to use them in any publications or communications
that the organizers may deem suitable and/or necessary.

: Right of first refusal : Entities other than SEOUL DESIGN FOUNDATION may not use the submitted
designs until the foundation determines their status and whether or not they will be used by the foundation
as previously mentioned.
